SPANISH HOTELS WIN 2024'S TOURISM BOUNCEBACK - BOFA
Global tourism is now back to 96% of its pre-COVID levels. Southern European, and especially Spanish, hotels have been the biggest beneficiaries, according to BofA.
The average daily rate in Spain, a key hospitality metric, is up 11% year to date vs 2023 compared to a 5% increase in Europe as a whole, based on the investment bank's data.
BofA say this outpeformance is due to the supply/demand imbalance that has been building up in recent years. "Demand for overnight stays increased 12% over the 2015-23 period while the number of beds only increased 7% over the same period."
The demand is driven by more spending by tourists, off-season growth, and Spain's emergence as a luxury destination, among other factors, they say.
Though 2024 could be an unusual year, BofA expect ADR growth to normalise to 3-5% in 2024, as more supply comes online - Spain represented one quarter of total EU hotel investments in 2023.
