Intesa Sanpaolo names former policeman to head security after data breach
Oct 17 (Reuters) -Italy's biggest bank Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI has appointed General Antonio De Vita, a recently retired former police officer, as its head of security, a new division it created after a major data breach.
Intesa has been placed under investigation by prosecutors in the southern city of Bari after it emerged that a now dismissed employee of the bank reportedly spied on the accounts of thousands of customers, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other high-profile figures.
De Vita, whose last role was lieutenant general in the Carabinieri paramilitary police in charge of four regions in southern Italy, will report directly to CEO Carlo Messina.
"With (De Vita's) ... arrival and the establishment of this new area, we will be able to ensure focus, investments, and resources in security ... with particular emphasis on technology", Messina said in a statement after the board approved the appointment.
In his role, De Vita will oversee both cyber and physical security as well as business continuity, Intesa said.
De Vita retired in July and on Sept. 1 he took on the role of Messina's senior adviser on security, people close to Intesa said on Saturday, adding the CEO would formally propose his appointment as head of security to the bank's board.
